Addressing climate change through participatory mapping: using technology and community-based approaches to support climate change adaptation in rural Tajikistan

In April 2019, the German development agency - GIZ - started implementing a new initiative called “Technology Based Adaptation to Climate Change in Rural areas of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan”. This project, which is financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) aims at strengthening adaptation measures to climate change in both countries.

CartONG’s involvement in this larger initiative started in February 2021 following a Grant Agreement with GIZ Tajikistan for a project named “Addressing climate change through participatory mapping: using technology and community-based approaches to support climate change adaptation in rural Tajikistan”. This project aimed at strengthening adaptation measures to climate change based on geographic information and open-source technologies and was conducted in collaboration with the Tajik association Little Earth.

REDD+ in Quang Binh, Vietnam

In 2011, after having completed the REDD+ pilot financed by TIDES in another province, GIZ expressed interest in supporting them and their local counterparts to set up a Buffer Zone Development Plan for the Phong Nha Khe Bang National Park in Quang Binh Province, Vietnam. The project’s overall goal is “Contribution to the conservation of the Northern Annamite Region, its biodiversity and ecological services in close relation with a sustainable socio-economic development“ and more specifically: “Reduction of the pressure on the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park (PNKB NP) and amelioration of the legal income of the target groups living the park region”. CartONG was supporting the elaboration of the spatial component of the conservation-oriented socio-economic development master plan for PNKB NP bufferzone until 2020 and with the vision until 2030, more concretely to assess available spatial data, ensure sufficient data is collected and to produce a set of thematic maps depicting the current situation.

Projet GoogleREDD pour la gestion durable des forêts (Viêt Nam)

Google REDD est un projet de CartONG et la GTZ (l'agence de coopération allemande) au Viêt Nam étudiant les options d'aménagement forestier durable pour les minorités ethniques dans la région centrale des hauts plateaux, dans le cadre du programme des Nations Unies "Réduire les émissions de CO2 provenant de la déforestation et de la dégradation des forêts" (REDD). Le but principal du projet est la cartographie de la déforestation de zones témoins, avec les techniciens forestiers de la GTZ et les communautés locales. Après avoir été responsable des composantes thématiques et spatiales du plan de développement de la zone périphérique du parc pour les communautés de Phon Kha Khe en 2011. CartONG s’est occupé, en 2012, de documenter tout le processus, de l’analyser et d’élaborer un guide étape par étape.
