This internship is made for you:
Founded in 2006, CartONG is a French "H2H" (Humanitarians to Humanitarians, i.e. an NGO working in support of other NGOs) non-governmental organization specialized in mapping and information management support for humanitarian and development organizations. Our core expertise is geographic information, but we have extended it other the years to other technologies (mobile data collection, information management, remote sensing, drones, participatory mapping, etc.).
We support international aid organizations, NGOs and public authorities by providing tools, services & trainings that allow them to better plan, implement and evaluate their programs, therefore improving the impact of humanitarian aid in favor of the most vulnerable. We focus on training local staff and collaborating with local communities, in order to provide projects that are sustainable and tailored to the needs and priorities of the people we are seeking to assist.
We work with local, national and international organizations, in particular NGOs specialized in disaster response and development as well as UN agencies (MSF, UNHCR, AFD, Terre des Hommes, etc.: complete list here). CartONG is a fast growing & dynamic organization, gathering around 20 international staffs and 50 active volunteers.
Our headquarters are based in Chambéry - a short train ride away from Geneva and Lyon and their international airports. Chambéry is a vibrant student and family city with many great bars and restaurants, located in the heart of the French Alps and surrounded by the Bauges and Chartreuse mountain ranges.
We are currently looking for an intern in charge of event planning for the 2020 GeOnG forum to join our team.
Since 2008, and every two years, CartONG organizes the GeOnG Conference: the humanitarian & development data forum (to learn more, please refer to the 2018 edition: https://cartong.org/geong/2018).
The GeOnG is the biggest independent conference on geographic information in Europe (with 190 participants from 90 organizations in 2018). It has become a major event on (web)-mapping, mobile technologies, information management, and more generally, the use of new technologies in the humanitarian and development sectors.
This forum brings together professionals from humanitarian NGOs and International Organizations, students and researchers, and representatives of the private sector to review the state of knowledge in geographic information, to share field experience, and discuss innovations, and potential improvements. The GeOnG is built around a combination of conferences and round-tables to discuss key challenges in the sector, of workshops to allow participants to be trained in the use of new tools, and of sessions allowing project managers to share their ideas.
In 2020, the GeOnG will take place from November 2nd to 4th at Le Manège (Conference Centre of Chambéry). The last editions of the GeOnG helped the event become a fully professional forum, with an always growing number of participants, budget, sponsoring, and international visibility.
For this 7th edition, CartONG plans to maintain the level of participation (approximately 200 participants as in 2018) while ensuring a diversification of the organizations represented and ensuring the participation of representatives of small organizations from developing countries, to maintain or even, if possible, increase the amount of sponsorship and, above all, to work on the formats of the sessions to meet the needs of the sector's stakeholders.
The main mission of the intern will be to support the organization of the GeOnG Conference, under the supervision of the Communication Officer who is in charge of managing the conference:
The trainee will be invited to show initiative and creativity to improve the organization of the event and propose new content. This internship offers an interesting opportunity to discover and manage the entire cycle of an event project (for a total budget of about 40,000€), by implementing the three main communication phases (before / during / after the event) in two working languages.
Depending on his/her skill-set and interests, the intern may also be asked to work on other projects for CartONG, such as:
The intern must be dynamic and resilient. Event planning requires a significant commitment with a peak of activity in the month before and the 2 weeks following the end of the event.
Education: Bac +4/+5 in communication/event planning/marketing or social sciences/political sciences
Previous experience: previous experience in communication and event planning would be appreciated (internships, volunteering experiences, service civic accepted)
Language skills: French - English position. A good level in both languages is required (solid B2 or even C1 in English).
Professional skills & abilities:
MANDATORY REQUIREMENT: only candidates currently registered as students and able to provide a tripartite internship agreement issued by a French higher education institution are eligible for this internship
