Do you want your application to properly work without an online server? Ensure that with Electron Organizations in the humanitarian sector often work in difficult conditions and in remote areas where internet connection is poor or not available. In these contexts, it is difficult, if not impossible, to access or process online data. This constraint applies to geographic web applications as well. In order to solve this problem, CartONG develops offline applications which work with local files directly updated by users. But these applications do not work well without a web server and users generally do not have the necessary rights to install a server. Generating an application container with Electron JS overcomes such a problem. Learn more on the process and its advantages by watching this Lightning Talk! To watch this Lightning Talk click here. Identifying Refugee sites on OSM with a dedicated tag - why does it matter? Before 2020, there was no uniform classification of refugee sites on OpenStreetMap, resulting in difficulties in finding and using the data about refugees. CartONG sought to address this problem by proposing a new tag Tag:amenity=refugee_site among the OSM user community. Since the approval of this tag, CartONG volunteers have been assigning this tag to refugee sites. In this Lightning Talk, CartONG will give a quick overview of the process and explain how the existence of this tag allows easy finding of refugee sites and separating such sites from permanent settlement. Accordingly, we are able to monitor the changes and analyse the situation in the refugee sites, without data disturbance from the non-refugee areas. We'll also cover the fact the tagging system has been used for web map applications developed by CartONG for UNHCR. Pour regarder ce Lightning Talk, cliquez ici. |

Everyone wants it, everyone needs it, the flashy dashboard, making your data stand out. Have you ever asked yourself which type of dashboard you should be using to display your operational data? In this Lightning Talk, CartONG will be drawing up scenarios on questions to ask and potential answers to expect when at the crossroad of deciding between an existing off the shelf tool and a custom made application. How to better integrate vulnerable populations in the data life cycle? Put those populations in charge of collecting the data. Integrity Action goes to the source when intending to make our approach as people-centred as possible. Our mobile app DevelopmentCheck is used by citizen monitors who use it to capture how local projects/services are performing. This includes registering problems and corresponding “fixes”. Some may ask, is this just outsourcing data collection to free volunteers? There are clearly challenges with citizen-generated data and we would use this time to cover what we’ve learnt about the practicalities of it, data quality, benefits and risks. We will also highlight how in response to the data quality challenge we adjusted our tech to introduce a project-specific question setting process. Each project context has a set of tailored questions which we develop with partners who have in-depth local knowledge of the context and what’s being monitored at the outset of the project. In addition, the previous version of the app used open questions to monitor project implementation, enabling the entry of detailed responses. However, we changed this to binary questions in the new version of the app, making the data captured more easy to compare and analyse. This Lightning Talk will look at what we’ve learnt on citizen-generated data and from adapting our data collection approach in this way. Pour regarder ce Lightning Talk, cliquez ici. |

Since 2018, CartONG has experimented with various “sensitive mapping” activities. Sensitive mapping is a new form of participatory mapping that consists in translating an individual or collective spatial representation into a material output according to a subjective, affective, imaginary and/or creative reading of a space. How can this innovative methodology be relevant in the context of humanitarian and development projects? Watch this inspiring Lightning Talk to learn more about this methodology, its added value compared to other participatory approaches, and how to integrate it to your projects at various stages (assessment, implementation, evaluation).
