On 08th August Google announced the Geo Challenge winners from the Geo Challenge contest 2008.

CartONG was among the 14 winners and has received a grant to realize a project for designing a pilot system for monitoring deforestation rates in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. The project will carry out forest inventories and calculate carbon stocks using models based on the forest inventories. The project partner in the field is GTZ (German Technical Cooperation). They implement a Sustainable Forest Management project and involve local university as well as local government.
Of course CartONG is very happy that the NGO has been chosen and very excited to have this great opportunity to work on this pilot project with environmental focus.
The fieldwork has already started and news on the project can be found here: http://cartongfieldmission.wordpress.com/
