CartONG has hosted the 4th Forum of Geographic Information for Relief and Development GeOnG in Chambéry (France), on September 22-23, 2014, around the theme "Turning data into actionable knowledge".
The next edition will be held on October 17 to 19th, 2016, on the theme "Impact of humanitarian IM: Lessons from the past, shaping the future".
Building on the success of the 2012 edition, which gathered almost 130 participants coming from 60 different organizations and 11 countries, CartONG has decided to keep on organizing this event. The humanitarian and development community met geographic information professionals once again to share new advances in mapping and information management technologies. 144 participants from 70 have gathered in Chambéry this year, of which 93% were satisfied of the organization of the conference!
The aim of GeOnG is to reflect over current practices and upcoming challenges in the field of geographic information for humanitarian purposes. The previous editions have therefore focused on technical developments, especially mobile technologies (2010), and cloud applications (2012).
For the 2014 edition, we have decided to take a step back. Given the large number of data collection tools and means to access and store data, we now face a situation never seen before: large amounts of data become available within hours/days of the onset of an emergency and many NGOs share their data publicly. As a result, our ability to process data and turn it into relevant information has become a crucial skill.
This year’s GeOnG is therefore an opportunity to learn more about data analysis tools, to discuss successful experiences and issues.
As during the previous editions, we will offer roundtables which will look at specific topics and practical issues, hands-on workshops which are a key feature of GeOnG, will be an opportunity to discover and learn more about innovative tools as well as data management essentials. This year training workshops will be more advanced and in reduced groups. Other formats will also be held, such as the speed geeking, a 2014 novelty: similar to speed dating it will provide an opportunity to meet differently as project managers will present their ideas and discuss it in small groups.
Please check the Participant's booklet for an overview of the sessions held and the participants during GeOnG 2014.
Presentations are published on our website on the Agenda page. You can also check the photos of the event.
Thanks again to our sponsors, who help us make this event possible!
