On Tuesday, October 18th, CartONG celebrated its 10th anniversary during the fifth bi-annual GeOnG conference. It was also the opportunity to release a video "CartONG – 10 Years of Humanitarian Mapping" on our action during this first decade.
The 2016 GeOnG – the international forum for humanitarian geographic information – which CartONG organizes every two years, was held from October 17-19 in Chambéry. Created in 2006, CartONG today has 14 staff and can count on some 60 active volunteers. The evening of the anniversary celebration was marked by the projection of a film “CartONG – 10 Years of Humanitarian Mapping”, as well as a video explaining the nature of humanitarian cartography (now visible on the page "Know nothing about humanitarian mapping?").
Yann Rebois, CartONG’s founder, and Sandra Sudhoff, its Technical Director, reminisced in a very personal way on the early days of the CartONG adventure, explaining the challenges the young organization faced. Representatives of CartONG’s partners - Mathieu Souppart (MSF), Lisa Daoud (Solidarités International), Alexandre Jaillon (IPIS) - emphasized the quality of the expertise in the fields of cartography and geographic information management that CartONG has developed and made available, over these years, to humanitarians.
After this wonderful celebration, CartONG is more than ever determined to continue to increase its skills, both to support its partners and to train its team to remain at the forefront of innovation. At the same time, CartONG will move to strengthen its position in order to participate in new projects & topics.
Thanks to all the participants & and the partners and friends that helped us during these 10 years!
