We have just started a research project on the usability of civilian drones for the humanitarian sector, in partnership with the NGO FSD, the UAViator network and Zoi Environment.
This project, funded by ECHO and lead by the Fondation Suisse de Déminage (FSD), will consolidate existing knowledge on the use of drones in the humanitarian context. It will also promote and disseminate the appropriate use and best practices among UN Clusters, NGOs and other relevant stakeholders during the next year and a half.
Following a first experience last year in Haiti, CartONG will be in charge of the technical side of this project, mainly testing several type of devices in different contexts, and assessing their outputs, in comparison with other existing sources of data (mainly satellite imagery). We will compile several case studies on projects conducted by other organizations, and conduct a few field tests to dig further on some use cases.
We hope that this project will allow to clarify the possible outputs of humanitarian UAVs in order to support cost-efficient and relevant planning.
You can follow the news of the project on this page: http://drones.fsd.ch/
We look forward to share the outputs of this project! If you have any suggestions or would like to get involved, please contact uav[at]cartong.org
