CartONG is pleased to announce its endorsement of the Principles for Digital Development. As part of the process of designing a comprehensive Associative Project in early 2019, CartONG decided it was a natural step forward for our organization to officially endorse the Principles for Digital Development. CartONG was in Haiti in June as part of the project "Vil nou nou pi si pou fanm yo" ("Our city is safer for women"), an initiative led by CARE's office in Jeremie and funded by UN Women. This project specifically aims to identify and map unsafe or high-risk places of gender-based violence in 7 neighborhoods of the city of Jeremie, using a co-constructive approach with the communities of youth and women living in these target districts. Learn more about the support provided in participatory mapping methodologies by our team in our news.

In August, we conducted a 2-week mission for Max Havelaar France in Cote d'Ivoire to support the follow-up of FairTrade cocoa cooperatives through mobile technologies. The project started by a small assessment of the situation and comparison of tools that could best cater to these needs, followed by a preparation of the digitization of the process through mobile data collection that was then tested, piloted and improved accordingly with the FairTrade teams in Cote d’Ivoire in preparation for a full deployment. The whole approach was seen very positively by the teams, who are already considering other data collections to be digitized as well as sharing the tools with other countries. Have a look at a few pictures of the mission here.

As one of UNHCR’s implementing partners for mapping and IM activities, in July 2019 CartONG provided support to the Shelter and Settlement Section in 5 refugee camps in northern Ethiopia: MaiAini, Shimelba, Berahle, Aysaitta and Kebribeyah. The first phase of the support was remote, via the organization of Mapathons in 12 French cities. In the second phase, the outputs of the Mapathons were used as a basis for the mobile data collection conducted in the field in order to gather exact locations and attribute information for camp infrastructure as well as additional information necessary for the shelter gap analysis. The third phase focused on providing data visualization tools to the end-users and sharing collected data back to OSM.

Lessons Learned paper on MDC: written by CartONG, this paper reflects on five years of experience gained by Terre des hommes implementing Mobile Data Collection (MDC) projects in its countries of operation worldwide. It aims at helping field operations and HQs make the best use of MDC in their programs by summarizing the key lessons learned throughout these 5 years of MDC roll-out as well as, amongst other aspects, the path taken by the organization to scale up MDC over the years and the uses to which MDC is put.

- Different documents produced to support the scale-up of the WASH KAP survey in all refugee camps every year, including a "WASH KAP Deployment Checklist" that can also be used and adapted for other data collection projects.

Get involved! CartONG is looking for volunteers to support its ongoing projects. Recent examples of collaboration between CartONG staff and volunteers include the production of 6 maps in support of our partner Care Haiti in Jeremie as well as the production of 5 maps for Planète Réfugiés on the number of death penalty prisoners in the world. Although we mostly need support on mapping, GIS, MDC and web development… we’re looking for a wide array of skill sets (communication, design, translation, project coordination, research, etc.). So don’t hesitate to reach out if you have a bit of time and would like to help!
