Although it has become a key element in the coordination of operations, program data management remains somewhat invisible from the perspective of the French-speaking humanitarian and development sector. In order to feed discussions on the topic among CSOs and their stakeholders, CartONG is proud to announce the release of an in-depth study on the practices and needs of Francophone CSOs in program data management.
This document proposes a clear definition of the concept, details the data management issues that Francophone CSOs are currently facing and clarifies their relationship with the subject matter by proposing a first typology. It also specifies the conditions of support, types of resources and the priority themes for which a support is expected by CSOs, before ending with a list of recommendations for all actors involved. Learn more about the origins and the key findings of the study here.

~ The GeOnG is going virtual this year! ~
|
|
 |
The GeOnG Forum is going virtual this year: it will take place online from November 2nd to 3rd. The move to an online format has opened up new opportunities for international speakers and audiences to attend this year’s edition, making it more inclusive and our biggest edition so far!
The spirit of the GeOnG will remain the same! We have planned 10 roundtables as well as an experience-sharing session on the Covid-19 crisis. We will also strive to offer a selection of online workshops as well as lightning talks on a wide range of topics related to the theme of the 2020 edition: "People at the heart of Information Management: promoting responsible and inclusive practices".
We are also very pleased to announce that Ben Parker from The New Humanitarian will be opening the event as keynote speaker.
A majority of the conference content will be available free of charge to registered participants and then made available to the sector as a whole following the event.

~ Since March, CartONG has been supporting its main partners, MSF and UNHCR in their fight against covid-19 ~
|
|
From the first days of the Covid-19 crisis, a team was mobilized to respond to MSF's needs to stay informed in real time of the evolution of measures at the borders of the 70 countries of intervention, and of access conditions for airways and roads - in order to be able to maintain the projects underway worldwide, as well as to support their management of human and logistical resources. To this end and thanks to a proven technology, CartONG's web development team - in support of the MSF GIS Unit and for the first time in collaboration with MapAction - set up a Dashboard within a few days that could be daily and in part fed automatically with updated data gathered by a team of CartONG volunteers. This was the first time at CartONG that a project gathered such a large contingent of volunteers, with over 20 people involved for several months and coming from more than 10 countries! The coordination between CartONG and its team of volunteers, MapAction and MSF very much demonstrated our ability to respond with dynamic tools and resources in times of crisis. More details to come about this undertaking on our website in the near future.
CartONG has also been supporting UNHCR in setting up a COVID-19 dashboard. The aim of this dashboard was to display Covid-19 case load as compiled by the John Hopkins University together with relevant information about preparedness, refugee numbers, as well as Public Health related operational figures such as health facility assessments. All this data is being collected, maintained and stored by different entities which makes data interoperability processes a key aspect for this dashboard to function and fulfill its objective. CartONG used Python and PHP scripts to pull in the information from KoBo as well as published GIS Services into an ESRI Operations Dashboard.
CartONG is also supporting many other aid organizations in their fight against the pandemic, in particular through the IM Covid-19 Help Center (learn more below).

~ "Mappe ton Monde": raising awareness about the humanitarian and development sectors through participatory mapping! ~
|
|
With the support of the ISI initiative (launched by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs in partnership with FONJEP), CartONG conducted a project in the summer of 2020 with a group of teenagers from the youth center Chantemerle in Chambéry, combining participatory mapping and awareness raising about the aid sector. The participants were able to reflect on their representations of the world. They contributed remotely to a humanitarian mapping project and produced a uMap highlighting the vision and the relations that inhabitants of the Chantemerle neighborhood have with solidarity and the rest of the world. The teenagers presented their work at the 2020 edition of the Marché des Continents on September 12th in Chambéry.

As part of the provided support, CartONG will be building an interactive map, that with the help of the KoBo Mobile Data Collection tool, will allow the participating youth of the project to share data about local infrastructure and services on health education, training, protection and ultimately, youth engagement as well as social cohesion activities. CartONG will also be in charge of delivering a trainers' training for local trainers involved in the project to improve local capacity in mobile data collection, GIS and information management.

The H2H Network has launched a new website. CartONG has been a proud member of the network since its creation in 2016, as we strongly believe in its raison d'être: providing technical, independent & expert services by humanitarians for humanitarians. We invite you to discover it here.
The SENS V3 guidelines are out! SENS is a multi-sectoral series of survey tools which aim at standardising the way annual nutrition surveys are conducted by UNHCR health and nutrition partners! CartONG revised the xls forms and the MDC training material as well as translated those materials into French.
MapSwipe is now available in French! MapSwipe, the mobile application that facilitates remote mapping, is now available in French! Download and start using the app to help humanitarian organizations with a simple thumb-slide anytime, anywhere!

~ Join the CDAC Network's Online Annual Public Forum to radically re-imagine digital humanitarian policy ~
|
|
The responsible and ethical use of emerging technologies within humanitarian systems requires intentional, democratised design with diverse perspectives to ensure that technological futures do not exacerbate past inequalities. Inclusive futures that impact all of us cannot be designed by just a select, privileged few. For much of the world algorithmic accountability goes unchecked.
The CDAC Network’s 2020 Annual Public Forum, Accountability in the Age of the Algorithm: Championing Pathways to Inclusion in Tech-Driven Futures, will bring together a diverse set of actors, thought leaders and decision makers from across the globe to discuss digital inclusivity, issues that constrain it, best practice from across the globe, and how we can ensure new technologies work for some of the world's most vulnerable populations.
Held the week before the 2020 GeOnG Forum, on October 28 & 29, the CDAC Annual Public Forum will complement this year’s GeOnG: we are working with the CDAC Network to generate conversations across the two events. This event is free of charge and is open to anyone with an interest in making the world of technological innovation more equitable. You can register now here.

On-site mapathons
Since September, we have adjusted the format of the on-site mapathons to the Covid-19 context (masks are now mandatory, physical distancing is enforced, etc.). Attendance is limited to 10 people - including our facilitators - until the end of the year. Due to this unstable context, registrations are only opened 10 days in advance and the registration link is shared on our social media accounts. Keep an eye on the calendar here.
Online mapathons
They take place on Mondays from 6pm to 8pm via Skype. Whether you are an experienced OSM contributor or a beginner, you are welcome to join and discover online humanitarian mapping. To register, please send an email to the Missing Maps team telling us which date you are interested in, if you already have experience contributing to OSM and what is your Skype username. Check out the dates here.
