Over the past three months, our commitment to humanitarian and development organizations has continued steadily. Our teams - both salaried and volunteer - were quick to provide mapping support - data research, base maps and mapathons - following the earthquake in Morocco and the floods in Libya. Such mobilization has enabled humanitarian actors to better target their efforts in these disaster-stricken regions, a principle of emergency mapping to which we draw attention in a platform for the French newspaper Libération. At the same time, we also worked closely with the GIS Cenre of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in the field through two deployments. In addition to our continuous operational support, we also provided numerous training courses in mapping and data management. Here's a look back at 3 months of CartONG activity.

~ Civic Service Volunteers strengthen the localization of our projects ~
This year, CartONG participated for the first time in the International Volunteering and Reciprocity initiative. It has proved to be a real asset in strengthening the localization of our projects, while encouraging fruitful exchanges and knowledge sharing. Alpha and Ezéchiel joined CartONG at the beginning of the year and contributed to better orientate some of our projects with their experience and ideas, while living an enriching human, personal and professional experience. Learn more about their experience and how to become the next CartONG Civic Service Volunteer.

"Alpha and I are originally from West Africa, and thanks to this project, we've been able to make the voice of our realities heard and bring a concrete dimension to the activities we set up. We identified the challenges involved in making the game accessible to a wider audience and enabling OSM communities to get to grips with it." Ezechiel, Civic Service Volunteer.

~ Our mapathons are back after the summer ~
Our mapathons are back! As part of its support for the international Missing Maps project, CartONG organizes mapathons to support solidarity projects. This year, we'll be mapping Senegal, Cameroon, Bosnia and Lebanon, in support of different organizations including the Arcade association, Afrique France Solidaire, Potentiel 3.0 and the UNHCR.
Join us online every Monday at 6 pm (information here, in French) or in-person all over France, following the calendar that will be announced on our social media.
If you are a university, third place or company and you want to get involved, reach out to us, we're also looking for additional venues to host this new season of mapathons!

~ 1-week training in Ankara on GIS basics for ASAM ~
In July, a CartONG GIS Specialist was deployed to Ankara, Turkey, for a one-week training in support of the NGO SGDD-ASAM, which works in the field of migration and support to the internally displaced people in Turkey following the February 2023 earthquake. The training covered basic GIS principles and theory with a focus on QGIS, a GIS open source tool that met SGDD-ASAM’s needs. Participants had the opportunity to practice through exercises specifically created for the NGO’s context using their own dataset, the same that would then be used in their day-to-day operations. As in all trainings, CartONG also provided an up-to-date step-by-step guide with all the QGIS features covered during the training, as well as a set of recommendations based on the assessment of SGDD-ASAM’s datasets and data management practices.
"The training was helpful for us to create meaningful and reader-friendly maps, especially because it was designed based on our own data."
"Both the comprehensiveness of the training and using our own dataset made the training very effective for us."

Mapping support for the Habitat Cité’s activities in Haiti - CartONG will support HC in the creation of a mapping database of their activities in Haiti as well as a map to locate the association's projects (housing rehabilitation and/or construction, redevelopment of public spaces), with a particular focus on edible forests. Finally, CartONG will also provide support in the implementation of participatory mapping activities: identifying an approach for mapping edible forests, remote training on animating participatory mapping workshops, and remote support to present the results of the workshops.

Data management support to BNGRC Madagascar - CartONG is supporting the National Office for Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC) of Madagascar on their data management practices, in particular in relation to supply chain risk management. This project includes remote support to assess the needs and two field missions to finalise the needs assessment and provide training on specific tools depending on the identified needs. The project is implemented with the financial support of Help Logistics.

Training Cycle on Responsible Data Management - CartONG started a new training under the form of 5 webinars to discover responsible data management and data protection for MEAL/IM field coordinators of French humanitarian NGOs. This training is organised in the framework of the CartONG initiative to help humanitarian actors better integrate responsible management and data protection practices into their programs (thanks in particular to the "Support Fund for Structuring Humanitarian Initiatives" of the MEAE's Crisis and Support Centre).

MISSIONS, TRAINING ACTIVITIES & EVENTS
EVENT ATTENDED - CartONG is present at the International Festival of Geography. Our staff is leading a conference where we present a participatory mapping project we implemented in Tajikistan to adapt to climate change and is contributing to a roundtable on the response to humanitarian emergencies by explaining the role of mapping is this context.
TRAINING - After a first training conducted in June for Expertise France teams on how to conduct the Monitoring and Evaluation of a project, the training cycle started again this month and will last until the end of the year.

MISSION - A GIS Officer was deployed in Madagascar for a 4-week mission with the MSF GIS Centre this August. The aim was to examine the trajectories and impact of hurricanes in the Fitovinani and Vitovinani regions over the last five years. Information on hurricanes were cross-referenced with epidemiological data (origin of patients, spread and source of epidemic, etc.) and data on medical structures to create emergency preparedness tools. GIS training was also provided for on-site teams.
EVENT ATTENDED - CartONG is a longstanding member of the CHD (Coordination Humanitaire et Développement). Last week, our staff participated in the celebration of CHD’s 40th anniversary. An excellent opportunity to present our organization and exchange with the other members of the network on the current challenges in humanitarian aid and international solidarity.
