In 2015-6 we conducted two trainings for IPIS, one on Mobile Data Collection and geodatabase management (5 days) and one on ArcGIS server (5 days) for their HQ staff in Antwerp.

CartONG was appointed by Terre des Hommes to carry out a study on Case Management tools used in the Protection field. CartONG therefore undertook the evaluation of needs (with interviews with Tdh staff and with other NGOs), before testing out a certain number of tools,and working with Tdh on the strategy for the future on these subjects.

A remote support hotline for all Tdh delegations has been operational since 2016 so that any staff can ask for remote support from CartONG on mobile data collection (encoding issues, choice of tools, validation of a form before deployment, etc.). The hotline is a very well liked tool and has proved to be extremely useful to Tdh delegations. In 2018, for instance, CartONG received 63 hotline activations.

OpenStreetMap, the Wikipedia of maps, is a powerful tool to support local development and improve community resilience in case of crisis.

CartONG implements the Site Mapping together with UNHCR GDS unit (Global Data Service, previously known as FICSS within the organization) by deploying a user-friendly smartphone application for data collection and maintenance and which stores all collected information online in versatile web maps accessible to all actors in need of it. Already covered camps are accessible in the webmap section of the map portal (maps.unhcr.org).

CartONG continuously works on improving the site mapping application, and beyond this, our team also provides direct support to field operations.

Our staff worked for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Uganda, doing creation and maintenance of return monitoring database, collection and compilation of GPS coordinates, production of maps, and capacity building of local staff.
